- Sierra Leone – was named by the Portugese explorer Pedro de Sintra, after the striking mountains that he saw whilst in the country in 1462. The name Sierra Leone was adapted from Sierra Leona, the Spanish version of the Portuguese Serra Leoa (Lion Mountains).
